After a leaked audio tape revealed racist and derogatory comments about the Black kid of a white council member as well as about Indigenous immigrants in the city’s Koreatown district, the president of the Los Angeles City Council received numerous requests to quit on Sunday.

The remarks, which were made in a meeting with two other council members and a labour official last year, showed historical racial tensions in the administration of one of the country’s most diverse cities as well as rifts among the Democratic Party in the area.
How the council exposed audio
The City Council president, Nury Martinez, a Latina, compared the Black child of a white council member to a “changuito,” Spanish for “little monkey,” in the foul-mouthed audio, a copy of which The New York Times received and which was originally published by The Los Angeles Times. Additionally, she referred to the Oaxacan immigrants in Koreatown as “short little black folks.”
